If you ask any stoner what they're doing on a Friday night, don't be surprised if the most common answer is sitting in the living room's couch smoking weed and watching series until they fall into a deep sleep. Party invitation? Maybe next time, you know what I'm saying.
It's not that us stoners are boring, it's just we know to be wiser and do what we'd rather do instead of committing to plans that we'll later want to rather ditch for, guess what, getting high and chilling at home.
It's as if watching series and smoking weed were meant to be together forever. However, it isn't uncommon to be completely fried off your brain browsing through whichever TV streaming app you use and finding it quite hard to choose something to watch.
This is why we've created a list of our favorite series and TV shows for when you're high and looking for something entertaining to watch. Don't worry, we're not going to spoil anything so read on.
Recommendations Before You Sit!
Don't forget to get fully ready so that you can immerse yourself completely into the world of chillaxation. In order to do so, grab the following things:
- Water! That joint will leave you feeling thirsty so save yourself the trip to the kitchen later.
- The rolling kit, who knows if you'll want to go for a second toke?
- Snacks! Them munchies won't be attended by themselves.
- Ashtray, no one likes the smell of ash in their house.
- Comfortable clothes, there's no fashion show going on that we haven't heard of right? Chuck on those PJs.
Okay our beloved disciple, you're good to go now!
1. Rick and Morty
If you like watching comedy animated series like Family Guy or The Simpsons but you're looking for something slightly different then the answer you're looking for is Rick and Morty.
This American show was created by Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon back in 2013, and ever since we've been delighted to enjoy what these guys have to offer. Rick and Morty is one of our favorite shows because of its uniqueness and crazy storylines, its dark and smart humor, and epic characters.
Once you watch a few episodes and get the hang of it we can assure you won't be able to stop, says who's watched the entire 41 episode series more than 4 times. Will anything ever come closer to our hearts than Rick and Morty? We're not sure.
Rick and Morty fits in the sci-fi section without a doubt, portal guns, traveling through the universe, aliens, and potions are all some of the common elements you'll find in it. But if there's something this series isn't is dorky or cliché, and if anything is cliché, it is definitely intended. Be ready to be mind blown with the craziest stories ever told.
Anyway, what is Rick and Morty really about?
The Plot (no spoilers)
Rick Sanchez is the smartest human in the entire universe, and after a 20-year comeback into his daughter's life, Rick moves into Beth's family home, where he'll build his lab and incubator for all the sci-fi gadgets he's going to use in his later adventures.
Rick seems to have a special bond with his grandson Morty, who becomes his adventure partner on their missions to save the different problems that arise through the galaxy.
Enough said, we think it's time you roll yourself and whoever's Netflix and chilling with you a tasty Amnesia Zkittlez Auto joint and get ready to travel through the universe. And as Morty would say, "don't even trip, dawg" you'll enjoy it 100%.
2. Breaking Bad (1982)
Now if you yet haven't watched just one of the best series ever to be made then what even are you doing with your life?! We're not exaggerating, not only is the story amazing and hooking, but the style and way it was shot, a.k.a the cinematography, shows that the minds behind it truly knew what they were doing.
The first episode was released already 12 years ago, in 2008, and to this day we haven't yet seen anything able to top it, come at us Game of Thrones' fans, we're not scared.
This neo-western series has won several awards since its creation, which is attributed to Vince Gilligan, who not only wrote most of the script but produced the show and even directed some of the episodes. If 110 awards, including 16 Emmys and 2 Golden Globes, don't scream 'the best series ever made' then I don't know what does.
The Plot
After school chemistry teacher Walter White, played by Bryan Cranston, discovers that he has terminal lung cancer, his life takes a big turn.
As he tries to find ways to leave a legacy for his wife, son, and soon to be born baby, Walter bumps into an ex-student and junkie, Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul) who introduces him to the world of meth-cooking.
When Mr. White realizes that his product is the best in the market and the amounts of money involved in the business, what he thought to be a one time fling ends up developing into a much more complicated and full of twists story. So-long to the sticking-by-the-rules Walter and hello to the expert in cooking and dealing meth, Heisenberg.
Warning!Be careful or before you realize you might have watched an entire season of Breaking Bad and the second in queue.
Definitely do pull out your tastiest Crystal Meth Auto buds, pack your bong, and blast through the episodes of your soon-to-be new favorite series.
3. Trailer Park Boys
Now, Trailer Park Boys is another series about drug deals, only sliiightly different than the ones you'll see in Breaking Bad.
This Canadian show was created by Mike Clattenburg and released back in 2001. It started off as a low-key TV mockumentary, but little did they know that it would end up hitting the stars when Netflix spotted it and bought the rights to stream and produce it.
The Plot
The show is a fake documentary that follows the adventures of Julian (John Paul Tremblay), Ricky (Robb Wells), and Bubbles (Mike Smith), three residents at the fictional Sunnyvale Trailer Park in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia.
Shot in a real documentary way, with low definition cameras and microphones coming into shot, we witness the attempts for these ex-convicts to become rich and sort out their life forever, a.k.a. the 'Freedom 35' plan. However, it seems as if they can't escape breaking the law, especially Ricky, who's a master in the field of marijuana cultivation.
Spoiler alert! Kidding, but if there are any doubts that this is a stoners' show, Snoop Dogg himself making an appearance in a couple of episodes along with Doug Benson should shrug off any confusion.
Get ready to laugh your lungs out with these crazy Canadians as you spark up the oh-so high on THC Gorilla Cookies Auto.
4. Black Mirror
Now if you're into science fiction but you're looking for something slightly more 'real' than Rick and Morty then perhaps something like Black Mirror is what you should check out.
The best part about Black Mirror is that every episode is unrelated to the others, so you can watch one of them every now and then, without any commitments, great for those of us with commitment issues. And since every episode has its own storyline, there are episodes suitable for everyone's taste.
This dystopian sci-fi anthology was created by the British Charlie Brooker and first released in 2011. The show consists of 5 seasons, with a total of 22 episodes that vary in length and theme. However, all of them involve technology in some way and their main idea is to criticize and demonstrate how it affects our lives.
Black Mirror's Top 5 Episodes, No Spoilers
Since each episode is different from the previous and the latter, you might feel a little bit lost with what to start with. While some people would recommend going in chronological order, there is really no reason to do this, so you can jump straight into the best ones.
Not much will be said because sometimes it's better not to know too much, these are the 5 most acclaimed Black Mirror episodes:
- "San Junipero" Season 3, Episode 4. An all-time classic among the series' fans.
- "The Entire History of You" Season 1, Episode 3. What if you could re-watch your whole life as if it was a DVD?
- "Be Right Back" Season 2, Episode 1. A woman tries a new service that synthetically brings her dead boyfriend back.
- "Playtest" Season 3, Episode 2. Enjoy video games? Check out this futuristic immersive game proposed by the writers.
- "Hang the DJ" Season 4, Episode 4. A critique of dating apps, with a twist, of course.
Roll yourself a mind-opening joint with some delicious Gorilla Glue Auto and get ready to take off with its 24% THC content as you travel into the future with Black Mirror.
5. That '70s Show
Now if the future isn't really your thing, and you're quite the opposite, more of a retro head like some of us, then what are you waiting to play That '70s Show now!?
This is such a stoners' show it's even heartwarming that someone was so considerate to create such a beautiful thing. That '70s Show was first released in 1998 but it achieves to prevail in time for many reasons.
First, its all-stars cast, including the famous couple Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis, Laura Prepon, Topher Grace and Danny Masterson, keeps attracting new audiences. And let's not forget Tommy Chong from Cheech and Chong's participation as Leo, the recurring pothead who's friends with the gang.
The Synopsis
Eric Forman (Topher Grace) is a high school kid who spends most of his time hanging with his friends in his house's basement, where they like to gather in a circle and fill up the room with smoke.
Set in Wisconsin in the 1970s, the series is the best portrayal of what being a teenage stoner is like. You'll definitely feel identified with many of the guys' experiences on the show, and without a doubt, they'll keep you laughing hard.
Light up some tasty Lemon Pie Auto buds and fly back to the '70s to enjoy the good old days with the gang from That '70s Show.
6. Severance (2022)
Continuing on in a very similar vein to Black Mirror in terms of semi Sci-Fi awesomeness is one of the best shows to hit our screens in the last decade (or possibly ever) - Severance. Not hard Sci-Fi in the slightest (think Dune, Star Trek, Interstellar for hard Sci-Fi), Severance takes us on a truly bizarre and utterly mesmerizing ride through a dark, quirky, and sometimes nightmarish world where people make the choice to essentially split their consciousness between work and the rest of their life. Starring a stellar cast that includes some of the biggest names in the business - Christopher Walken, Adam Scott, John Turturro, Patricia Arquette - and a list of new faces that do a ridiculously great job, the casting for Severance couldn't be better.
Produced and directed by Ben Stiller, this show takes the audience on a mysteriously mind-bending ride full of dark twists and even darker humor, with the final episode of season one bringing one of the most delicious final ep cliffhangers in recent memory. The whole season is fantastic, but that last installment is up there with the best-ever eps. It's shot beautifully, the acting is just sublime, the world-building and storytelling are about as good as it comes, and the whole production just oozes brilliance. An absolute must-watch for anyone looking for something a bit different and super entertaining to get lost in - especially after a bowl full of the good sh**.
And it's not just us stoners who are calling it one of the best shows of all time. Quentin Tarantino tweeted "Severance is an absolute masterpiece", and Damon Lindelof shared this view saying he was "enraptured" by the entire first season. Filming for season two is already underway, and it is scheduled to air in October of 2023.
7. Southpark
Trends come and go, and so do TV shows - except for a very select few. Sure, we all know just how long-running The Simpsons is, but did you know that the next in line for the gold medal in longevity is actually Southpark? Written by Trey Parker & Matt Stone, Southpark has been on our screens since 1997 and is still going strong with no end in sight.
The way that this show can criticize aspects of modern society, the celebrity and politicians that profit off it, and the world more generally general, is a truly unique one. The show is able to take serious issues, heat them up and make us laugh at the absurdity of it all, in a way that no one else can or would. Every season is worth watching in its own right, but if you have somehow never seen Southpark, then we suggest you go ahead and check out these eps -
- The Succubus - Season 3 Episode 3
- Make Love, Not Warcraft - Season 10 Episode 8
- Medicinal Fried Chicken - Season 14 Episode 3
- Good Times With Weapons - Season 8 Episode 1
- Butters' Very Own Episode - Season 5 Episode 14
Plus sooooooo many more.
8. Game of Thrones
Look, we know that this show fell off of a cliff in the last two seasons. With no more source material to work with, the show-runners decided they would take the reigns and wrap the story up, and boy did they do a terrible job (personal opinion, but yeah, it sucked).
But that doesn't mean that the first 6 seasons aren't some of the best fantasy television of all time. Thanks to the mastermind Geroge R.R. Martin, the author of the series, and his unbelievable talent for creating complex and interesting characters set in a ridiculously detailed universe, this show is full of truly magical moments. Whether it's the epic battles, the dragon scenes, the stunningly well-written dialogue and plot twists, the huge battles, or the political intrigue - there are so many reasons why this show is perfect for a stoney night or 50.
9. House of the Dragon
So yeah, Game Of Thrones was rounded out by two very disappointing seasons. So when I heard that they were making a new show based on the GOT universe, I have to say that I wanted particularly excited. Probably more of the same sh**, and the same disappointment, right? How wrong I was...
House Of The Dragon is an absolute monster of a show - not only because it's based on the same universe as GOT, but because its bloody great! It moves a lot more quickly than Game of Thrones, with half of the main cast changing in the first season as the characters grow from children into young adulthood and beyond.
The show is set hundreds of years before the GOT story and focuses on the Targaryen dynasty that was on the throne at that time, plus all the drama and power struggles that come with the competing families. It's got a fantastic cast of established actors and new faces, some brilliant writing, and spectacular cinematography, and is full of thrilling fight scenes and plot twists. An absolute must-watch for any fantasy fans out there, even if you were burned by GOT. Standout performances by Paddy Considine, Olivia Cooke, and Matt Smith make this one of the best new shows around right now. Don't miss it!
10. Flight of the Conchords
New Zealand. Mostly known (in the film and TV world) for being the place where the Lord Of The Rings was filmed and in the past 7 years or so, the meteoric rise of Taika Waititi as both an actor and director. But where did he get his first real breakthrough? Well, on a hilarious little Kiwi comedy called Flight Of The Conchords. While this amazing series is still relatively unknown in the USA, it has a true cult following in many Western countries and is one of my personal favorite ever TV shows to rewatch, stoned or sober. Set in New York City, and centering on a ridiculous musical comedy duo from the New Zealand city of Wellington, the show follows the two main characters (the very average Jemaine Clement and his well-intentioned but completely clueless best mate Bret McKenzie) as they try to find success, fame, and glory in the states.
The quirky, off-beat style of comedy that New Zealanders have recently become well known for is on full display, and the result is a show that will have you giggling all series long. There are a bunch of great cameos from big names in the comedy world both here and in Britain, and the whole premise is just so ludicrous at times that you can't help but love it. It's an absolute classic, and we highly recommend it for anyone looking for some light-hearted, easy watching that will have you cackling away all night long.
11. The Mighty Boosh
A true trendsetter for the following decade or so, The Mighty Boosh is equal parts genius and absolutely bonkers. Starring Julian Barratt and Noel Fielding as two ridiculous characters, Howard Moon and Vince Noir, this British comedy first aired way back in 2004, but still remains just as fresh and funny today. The themes focused on, and the randomness that ensues is just such a perfect backdrop for a night in with your favorite strain. The show follows the two main characters along with their strange animal friends, as they try to "fulfill their destiny" and run a top-notch zoo. What transpires is an absolute mish-mash of plotlines that never fail to make you laugh.
From Noel Fielding's flamboyant fashion choices to the sheer weirdness of some of the characters and creatures featured, this show is definitely one to put on your list for a chilled-out evening. We recommend the 'Crack Fox' or 'Old Gregg' episodes if you want to dip your toes in and see what this show is all about.
The Office (US)
Based on one of the funniest British TV shows of all time, and one of the most important in terms of comedy TV styling, The Office (US) does what almost all other British/American crossovers fail at. That is, being funny. The US version of the office is more than just funny, though. It's a masterfully told story, with an amazing cast, and a writing style that just can't be beaten. From the ridiculous humor of Steve Carell's Michael Scott to the brilliance of Dwight K Schrute (Rainn Wilson) every character is so well written, and performed, that you can't help but fall in love with them all.
The show follows the daily goings on at a paper supply company in Pennsylvania and the hijinks that ensue as the characters try to make it work. There is a reason why this show became the most streamed show of all time during the COVID lockdowns, and even though it wrapped almost back in 2015, its popularity just continues to grow! Do yourself a favor. Roll up a big old joint, flick The Office on, and just wait. You'll be hooked in no time. One thing to note - the first season leans very heavily into the UK version. While I love this season, many people seem to not get down with it as much, and neither did the production. They decided to make a pretty significant shift from season 2 onwards, so if you try this one out and decided it's not really for you, maybe skip to the first episode of season 2. Trust me, it's amazing.
12. British Panel Shows
The British have a knack for producing some of the very best quiz/panel/contestant shows of all time, and that couldn't be more evident than right now. Look, there's absolutely zero shame if you haven't ever heard of any of these, as many of us over here in the 'Land of the Free' are totally unaware of the brilliance available. Let's quickly run through the best out right now.
Taskmaster
Hosted by a perfectly paired Alex Horne and Greg Davies, Taskmaster is easily one of the funniest panel shows ever made. The premise? 5 comedians have to compete against each other in a list of both absurd, but also challenging tasks, which are then judged by the Taskmaster himself - Greg. The tasks range from the incredibly mundane to the truly random, and the resulting scenarios often end in some of the most hilarious moments ever seen on TV. There's a bunch of perfect, British tomfoolery on show, and the laughs I have had from this show rival all others. Plus, most of it is on YouTube, just there waiting for you to have fun with!
Would I Lie to You
WILTY (as it is more commonly referred to in writing) is a brilliant panel show where six contestants - usually made of British celebrities and comedians and split into two teams of three - read the premise of a story off a card, while the other team tries to decipher if they are telling the truth or a 'porky pie'.
The result is some of the most entertaining 22-minute episodes currently on TV. Hosted by Rob Brydon, with Lee Mack and David Mitchel as the team captains, this show is perfect for a relaxed evening with friends or family. The stories offered as possible truths can be truly side-splittingly funny, with some of my personal favorite comedy moments of all time. Think of it more like a friendly comedy battle than a sitcom. Again, most episodes are available for free on YouTube!
8 Out of 10 Cats do Countdown
8 Out of 10 CATS DO COUNTDOWN is a mash-up of two British TV shows, both hosted by the super quick-witted Jimmy Carr. The premise is that each week, two teams of comedians battle it out in the Countdown studio for a chance to win an incredibly useless trophy. They are asked to blindly pick a set of random cards which correspond to a certain number and are then asked to work out a mathematical equation with those numbers to reach a certain number. Jesus, lots of numbers, and sounds a little boring, right?
WRONG! As far as panel shows go, this is definitely in the top 3. Teaming Jimmy's razor-sharp wit and common sense humor with a bunch of some of Britain's funniest comedians, all while under the pump to do some mostly simple but sometimes roundabout mathematics makes for seriously funny moments.
13. Shoutouts
Ok, so while we would love to continue with these breakdowns, this article has to end somewhere. But no before a few shoutouts to shows that missed out on the main list, but are still worthy of more than a passing mention.
Westworld Season One
What a shame this show fell off the wagon, as season one is some of the best TV viewings of all time. Starring Anthony Hopkins, Evan Rachel Wood, and Jeffrey Wright, this show is an absolute must-watch for anyone who loves sci-fi/western shows. Masterfully written and shot, the first season deals with some extremely interesting about what makes someone or something conscious and is done in a way that is both thought-provoking and entertaining.
It is also a great example of how stories can take unexpected turns, and still end up being amazing. And while there are a couple of watch-worthy episodes in seasons two and three, you can just jump off the train at the end of the first.
True Detective Season One
The first season of True Detective is downright unbelievable. This show had a huge hand in the relaunching of both Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey's careers, as the two of them play a pair of detectives working on an almost decade-long case. The writing is gritty and realistic, with the show taking us on a journey that has enough twists and turns to keep you guessing all season long. Plus, it offers up some amazing cinematography and an overall atmosphere that is both gripping and haunting. If you like your crime shows done well, then True Detective should be a top priority on your watch list.
14. In Conclusion
Watching series while you're high is sure fun, you don't need to be no scientist to realize that. However, it can be slightly down putting when the show isn't really vibing with your highness.
Hopefully, you've found something that matches your expectations on this list, and you can enjoy your time chilling and relaxing at home.
